Iran, Armenia agreed to keep Caucasus transit route open

Tabriz, IRNA – Iran’s Deputy Minister of Road and Urbanization Kheyrollah Khademi said that Iranian and Armenian officials have held effective meetings, agreeing to keep the Caucasus transit route open.

Speaking to reporters while paying a visit to the Nurduz border cross in Northwest Iran, Khademi said that Iranian and Armenian officials agreed on three decisions.

The first decision is to keep open the transit route connecting Iran to Armenia and thence to Georgia, according to the official.

He added that the second decision was to operationalize an alternative route offered by Armenia and also relocate a 20-kilometer part of the existing route which crosses Azerbaijan Republic as the third decision.

Iran and Armenia have agreed to reconstruct hazardous spots in Tato transit road in Armenia, while the implementation of another road as the fourth piece of North-South transit route was ongoing, according to Khademi.

He said that the fourth piece of the road would have 15 kilometers of tunnels and it would take five years to complete.
